Playing Smart: Using Honesty to Control Your Game

effort honesty May 01, 2024

In life, it's easy to think you're in control of everything, but, unfortunately, that's not how the game works. In The Winning Tools organization, we refer to this as the Control Illusion. Accepting that we are not in control is a difficult skill to learn, but in so many ways, it frees you up to become laser focused on the things you can.

Life's like a game, right? You've got your plays, your opponents, and the unexpected curveballs. But here's the thing—you can't control everything. Some things are just out of your hands. For example, we can control our effort, but not the outcome.

Honesty is the MVP

Honesty keeps you focused on what really matters and stops you from wasting energy on things you can't change. This is why honesty is at the core of everything we do within The Winning Tools system.

Keep It Simple

Here's the game plan:

1. Know Your Role: Take a minute to think about what you can and can't control. Focus on (and get honest about!) your strengths and let go of the rest.

2. Stay in Your Lane: Don't try to do it all. Stick to what you're good at and trust your teammates to handle their part.

3. Roll with the Punches: Life's full of surprises. Stay flexible, stay positive, and be ready to adapt when things don't go as planned.

Game Over

By using honesty to control your game, you can win even when the need for control tries to take you out. So, keep it simple, stay focused, and remember—you've got this!
